| Description | | |
Rembrandt, the most highly regarded Dutch artist of the 1600s, had an exceptional ability to convey the meaning of his subjects through expressive composition, lighting, and handling of paint. The wide range of his works includes historical, mythological, and biblical subjects, portraits, landscapes, and scenes of daily life. The paintings by Rembrandt in this gallery illustrate the shift in his style from an early, meticulous rendering of textures and details to the loose, vigorous brushstrokes of his old age. Also displayed here are works by Rembrandt's teacher, Pieter Lastman; his rival, Jan Lievensz; and some of his many pupils.
